That's What She Said

Happy New Year, kittens!

Are you ready for another raucous year of spoken word all written and performed by women? 'That's What She Said' is For Books’ Sake’s monthly open mic performance night, welcoming a wide range of speakers, from slam poetry to storytelling and contemporary political thought to comedy. We bring women’s voices to the forefront, while at the same time giving a platform to writers and performers we love.

Featured speakers on the night:

Leyla Josephine is a spoken word artist and theatre maker from Scotland. In 2014, she won 'Rally & Broad's Cultural Commonwealth Slam' and 'Hammer & Tongues UK National Slam'. Her work is always autobiographical and shines a new light on personal things that are often embarrassing. Her poetry moves from comical to serious effortlessly. She also works in different social context teaching drama and creative writing.

Barbara Nadel is a full-time author of two crime fiction series. One, the Cetin Ikmen series, is set in Istanbul and is published by Headline. The other, the Hakim and Arnold series, is set in the East End of London and is published by Quercus. Originally trained as an actress, Barbara has a degree in psychology and worked in psychiatric institutions before becoming a full-time writer. She is married with one son and one grandson and she currently lives in Essex. She is allowed to live in what she only thinks is her house, by the real owner, a Siamese cat called Lily.

Open mic walk ups on the evening are welcomed but with limited places it might be advisable to email paul@forbookssake.net if you have a burning desire to speak 
out and speak up.
