Making A Dreamcatcher
British Summer Time
at The Book Club
Event Details
Originally, the native Americans made dreamcatchers as a protective charm to hang over the cots of babies and catch all the bad spirits that came their way, like a spiders web. The sacred hoops were hung to soothe the sleepers beneath, letting good dreams through (passed down through the feathers) and holding back bad, which would be burned up by the morning sun the next day.
Although they have been largely commercialised in recent decades and have been misappropriated in some places - they are still beautiful. Great for gifts, wall hangings and an interesting weaving technique, this workshop, run by Emily, will teach you the basics of weaving and decorating dreamcatchers and give you some time to reflect on the coming year, with the aim of creating gorgeous pieces with a respect for their initial intentions in mind.
You'll be given a 8" embroidery hoop, a large choice of yarns, beads and feathers with which to complete the dreamcatcher and hands on support and guidance to help you master the basics of the weaving technique.
What's more, £5 of this class will be donated to the 999 Club - a homeless shelter in Deptford, London
